About Doom 3 & Resurrection of Evil

Doom 3 introduced in it's mechanic a simple addition. A very dark environment and a flashlight that can only be equipped one at a time. Gameplay is very different in comparison with the first few games. Now this basically FPS, contains survival horror elements which are capable to send a full grown man to asylum after a few game sessions. Every time the player must decide which tactic to choose. To equip the flashlight and see how he dies, smashing his light into the zombie's guts, or just shoot in the dark, screaming desperately and hoping he killed some of those inhuman creatures. The guys at ID also thought that very realistic graphics can alone scare anybody. And boy, they were right. Doom 3 was released in 2004, and by the way it looks better than Rage that was released in 2011. This game just like Silent Hill 3 set the standart so high that very few game companies can match technical and programming capabilities of those dudes. There are also a lot of mods for Doom 3. Some of them make the game look even better than it looks already. After you see the game with some HD textures you are going to laugh at every PS4 game presentation. Some mods make the atmosphere of Doom 3 even deeper, transforming the game in some kind of simulator of a space marine which is doomed. By adding some new mechanics using mods and by enhancing the game's graphics you can have the ultimate unique science fiction survival horror experience that no game can match. All you need is a powerful PC and a copy of Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil expansion pack and you're all set. By the way i don't recommend buying the Doom 3: BFG Edition. Although the idea of making a definitive Doom collection in one package is plausible, the realisation of this particular package is laughable. The game is just too bright, and all textures look washed because PS3 and Xbox 360 even now can't handle the Original Doom 3 engine. Of course it's maybe because the engine wasn't adapted for the new consoles, but this doesn't justify a buying of a worse version of the game if there is a better original version. BFG Edition is just a PC port of a console release. From the plot point of view the game is simple. It puts you in a skin of some random space marine which came to mars as a replacement for some other gone mad or missing marine. The character in this game doesn't speak, so it's easier to imagine it's you (the player) who is trying to survive the Martian incident. But the beginning of the game itself is very immersing, kinda like that tram ride from the first Half-Life. Playing through it you can enjoy the peace of the Martian base for the last time, and see how the scientists work in their natural habitat. Right at the beginning you can grow yourself some little Satan horns and delete a couple of cargo entries from the database while nobody can see you, but one suspicious entry is refusing to be deleted, what's inside is a big mystery of galactic proportions. From a couple of discussions you can learn that working on a remote base on another planet can badly affect the human mind, or even turn him mad. Through the station is circulating a rumour about the strange readings from Alpha Labs. Their machinery is demanding too much energy breaking the balance of the whole station. A couple of technicians and soldiers are telling you that Mars is a dangerous place, and you must always be on alert. You progress through the mess hall where you can close the shutters thus turning the artificial illumination on, and play the best game in the galaxy, Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3. Some information you can learn watching TV, after which it's a good idea to punch a hamburger in the face. Going further, a strange one eye creature man Berthrugher is trying to convince the inspector, that he runs the show and they need even more energy. When marine arrives at command post, he receives his first assignment, to find a missing scientist. To find the scientist marine must first equip himself with Armour, pistol and flashlight (clothes, boots and motorcycle). The pistol once again reminds the design of a classic gun that Deckard used in Blade Runner. After equipping the stuff, the game becomes more peaceful, at the same time more unsettling, because all the stories you heard earlier from the technicians are starting to haunt you as you move forward just listening the loud noises of different machinery. You are starting to realise that anyone can go mad in a place like this after a couple of months. The path leads you to an airlock, and you get the chance to see the outside area of almost terraformed Mars. Finding the scientist, you learn from him that the team excavated "something", and the Martian hell broke loose. From this point starts a very long and scary survival mission through almost the whole Mars base. To enjoy this game's full potential, it must be played in a closed room at night in headphones, and of course Oculus Rift. If you enjoy great games with deep atmosphere in a believable sci-fi setting you must play this. It's not a short game. It will keep you scared for 15-20 hours depending on the difficulty, and by the way the nightmare difficulty drains your life over time and leaves you only with 25 percent of it, it's very likely you will die at the very beginning alone in the dark alongside a power generator.
